It Started With a Horse Named Shiloh
In 2010, a female Army veteran stood alone in a Colorado meadow, carrying a childhood of abuse and military sexual trauma she had learned to bear quietly, alone. She’d been sent to spend time with Shiloh, a rescued Belgian draft horse — cantankerous, wary, shaped by his own history of neglect.
She reached for him. He turned away. Then a second horse moved in behind her and gave her a gentle nudge — keep trying. So she turned back, closed her eyes, and simply breathed. With every breath, Shiloh moved closer, until he wrapped his neck around her and held her while she wept out years of pain no one had ever been permitted to hear. No therapy. No medication. Just a horse, a woman, and a kind of grace that doesn’t announce itself.
That woman was Dr. Rachel Mikaelsen. That moment became EQUINE FACILITATED SPIRITUAL CARE℠.
